Community spirit celebrated in York
York Cares, a charity that encourages local businesses to let their employees help out in the community, recently celebrated its participants’ achievements. Around 50 volunteers attended a reception at the Mansion House, including the charity’s new chairman, John Lister, chief actuary at Norwich Union.
Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, hosted the event to thank those volunteers that had made a positive impact on the city over the previous 12 months. Lister said: “It is so important to recognise and celebrate the work done in York by volunteers from different companies. This is a win-win situation. Not only does volunteering help the community but also volunteers gain skills and have pride in what they have achieved.”
York Cares has been involved in a number of initiatives in the area, such as helping children with their mathematics and reading skills, and working on environmental projects.
