Marathon effort for CHAS
The Faculty of Actuaries Students’ Society (FASS) entered 15 relay teams in this year’s Edinburgh Marathon, along with Kenny Tindall (FASS Treasurer), Chris Hancorn (FASS Secretary), and Sarah Turner (from Standard Life), who were attempting the full distance. All 15 teams, Kenny, Chris, and Sarah were raising funds for CHAS (Children’s Hospice Association Scotland) – the Faculty’s nominated charity for its 150th birthday celebrations. The marathon was run on 11 June in extremely hot temperatures, so presented an even greater challenge than normal. We hope to have raised well in excess of £10,000 for CHAS from this event alone, taking the total raised this year above £25,000 – enough to fund the cost of a CHAS care team member for a full year.
There were many highlights on the day, including Chris Hancorn losing a bet against the Widow’s Old Actuaries (just getting beaten by them), but squaring that up by winning a bet for CHAS’s benefit, against Kenny Tindall (beating him easily!).
Congratulations to Hymans for bringing the first relay team home and to Sarah Turner who was inspired by the Faculty 150th campaign to run the whole marathon, despite her normal exercise only being a walk to the office each day.
